How to dress like this season's style hero

Geek chic not unfamiliar territory to the fashion world. When this writer was studying her trade at fashion college many moons ago, there were some (who have gone on to be very successful in fashion) who bought and wore glasses despite having perfect vision just to look like a stylish intellectual.

Bookishness has fascinated the industry for years, but no more so than this season when Wes Anderson's character Margot Tenenbaum became the inspiration for some of fashion's key shows - including Gucci, Erdem, Lacoste and Jonathan Saunders.

Gwyneth Paltrow's portrayal of an aloof chain-smoking literary genius in The Royal Tenenbaums has become a cult-like figure, and not least because of her unique way of dressing. Her look was inspired by 70s musician Nico, whose style had a similarly vintage thrown-together boho vibe. Margot Tenenbaum's take was more moneyed - a Fendi fur coat, striped Lacoste dresses and an Hermes bag. Her eyes were rimmed with dark kohl. It was intended to be part-child and part-adult, like a young girl who had been rummaging around her mum's wardrobe. She is beautiful, nonchalant and intelligent - it's an appealing image.

It's not an easy look to master - you don't want to end up looking like your nan drunk shopping in a charity shop. The key is to pick one or two pieces and work them into your own wardrobe. Try a midi skirt and wear with a band T-shirt and brogues; or throw a faux fur coat over a mini dress; team a chunky cardigan with leggings and loafers; or split your hair in a side-parting and slip in a hair slide, then dig out your eyeliner.

Mastering the Margot attitude of course goes further than what you're wearing. Accessorise with a bored expression and whatever you do don't smile. This isn't one for optimists. Underwhelmed is your mood of choice, and you might be called an emo at some point, but you don't care because you're smart as fuck. Ideally, you'll have a dysfunctional family. Don't talk about your emotions; Margot would be appalled by such indiscretion. Haughty is the thing and your weirdness is the best thing about you.
